about the speaker
The Church & Culture Conference is led by Dr. James Emery White - a speaker who is able to combine the intellectual and the practical like few can. With a Ph.D. and additional studies at such schools as Vanderbilt and Oxford, Dr. White serves as the ranked adjunctive professor of theology and culture at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, where he also led as their fourth president.
He also planted Mecklenburg Community Church (Meck) in Charlotte, North Carolina, which is home to more than 10,000 active attenders across five campuses. The melding of Dr. White’s research and the living laboratory that is Meck, is unique in the church world. Largely, because the ideas and methods have been held accountable. To date, more than 70% of Meck’s growth has come from the previously unchurched. Re-read that. Let it soak in.
Dr. White is the president of Serious Times, a ministry that explores the intersection of faith and culture and hosts ChurchAndCulture.org which features his messages and blogs. And finally, his books have framed some of the most important conversations for ministry today - from Rethinking the Church toSerious Times, from The Rise of the Nones to Meet Generation Z - and Meet Generation Z was recently named a 2018 Resource of the Year by Outreach Magazine.
Conference Plenary Sessions
Knowing the signs of the times and how best to live in light of them - particularly as the church - is a powerful combination. One of the clearest signs of our day has been the marked rise of the "nones" - those who when asked what their religious affiliation is would respond, "Nothing." This doesn't necessarily mean that they are rejecting God, rather they simply ignore Him and don't see how He has any relevance for their lives. In this session, James Emery White - author of The Rise of the Nones - will reveal some of the cultural trends that have led to this staggering rise.
THE RISE OF THE NONES
The rise of the nones has produced the first post-Christian generation in American history, “Generation Z,” which is also the largest generation of our day. In this session, James Emery White - author of Meet Generation Z: Understanding and Reaching the New Post-Christian World - will introduce you to this generation, lay-out the most important marks of Generation Z, and offer three critical approaches to reaching them for Christ.
MEET GENERATION Z
In order to reach Generation Z, cultural bridges have to be built with the unchurched. For not only are we in a post-Christian culture, but the world is also a post-truth world. The church must figure out ways to change to reach a generation who, when presented with the truths of Scripture, often choose to respond: “So what?” In this session you'll learn how we, as the church, can and must change to be effective in speaking out in our post-Christian culture and to encourage church growth from those who are unchurched.
